Tate & Lyle have decided to demolish the Staley Pump House.
It was erected back in 1919 as the Staley Pump House Fellowship Club. The upper level was an event ballroom that was a staple in Decatur nightlife in its heyday. Meanwhile, the lower level was the actual pumping station.
The current owners have begun demolition in a limited manner. The building has gone unused for decades and there is not enough funding to preserve it. Also, there have been a number of break-ins and the building has been vandalize. In its current state, it’s too dangerous to be open to the public. The tear down process will be ongoing.
