State Representative Sue Scherer is sponsoring a law to protect children in the care of the Department of Children Family Services. She is reforming how safety checks are done.
The idea is to change how home safety checks operate for children who were returned home after being in foster care.
The new bill, house bill 1551, would make it mandatory for the auditor general to do performance audits of home-safety checks one year after and then follow up on a basis of every two years after the initial audit.
The bill was met with bipartisan support and was signed by Governor Pritzker.
