The Illinois House has voted to put a graduated income tax amendment on the ballot for November of 2020. In a 73-44 vote that was split along party lines, the House voted to approve the measure yesterday. Lawmakers debated the measure for over three hours before it was put to a vote. Republicans worry that it will likely chase the wealthy individuals out of the state and have a negative impact on jobs. Democrats say it will help level the playing field in terms of state income taxes. Governor Pritzker, who himself is a supporter, said it would cut taxes for 97% of taxpayers in the state.
