Emergency communications in Illinois have entered a new era. All 169 Public Safety Answering Points statewide, known as 911 call centers, now operate on Next Generation 911 technology. This secure, IP-based system replaces traditional voice networks, offering faster, more accurate emergency response through geospatial call routing. The transition, starting in Grundy County in 2022 and finishing in Northbrook in March 2026, ensures calls are automatically directed to the nearest help, reducing dangerous delays. The new infrastructure also advances Text-to-911 services and sets the groundwork for future innovations such as sharing photos or videos directly with dispatchers during emergencies.
