Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is sounding the alarm over a sharp rise in text-message scams across the state. Scammers are reportedly impersonating the DMV, asking recipients for payment and sensitive personal information. Giannoulias makes it clear that neither his office nor the DMV will ever contact residents by text message to request money or personal details, nor issue threats about penalties. Residents are urged to remain vigilant, avoid clicking on suspicious links, and instead take a screenshot of any questionable texts and email them to the Secretary of State’s office to help combat fraud.
