GUARANTEED INCOME FOR MOMS ON MEDICAID

Chicago lawmakers have proposed new legislation aiming to support low-income families through guaranteed income for new and expectant mothers enrolled in Medicaid. Under House Bill 5238 and Senate Bill 3756, qualifying participants would receive a one-time payment of $1,500 during the third trimester of pregnancy. An additional $500 monthly would be provided during the first six months following childbirth. Supporters say these cash disbursements could improve health outcomes and reduce financial stress for vulnerable families. Pending approval, the initiative is slated to launch in July 2026, marking a targeted approach to maternal and infant well-being in Illinois.
