SNAP recipients in Illinois are facing new eligibility requirements. Adults aged 18 to 64 without children under 14 must now prove they’re working or volunteering at least 80 hours a month. Previously, a waiver allowed many to bypass this rule, but last year’s passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill changed that. Officials are reminding recipients to contact the Illinois Department of Human Services to find out if they qualify for an exemption. Those who don’t secure one by May 1 risk losing their benefits. Concerns are mounting among advocates about access to food and its impact on vulnerable families.
