The Illinois Department of Public Health is urging Illinoisans to take proper precautions against tick bites. The reminder comes after an Illinois resident became seriously ill with a tick-borne illness that hadn’t previously been detected in this state. Health officials are investigating whether the resident was exposed to the illness through a tick bite in Illinois or in a different state. Tips on avoiding tickborne illnesses, including walking in the center of trails, avoiding wooded, bushy areas with high grass and leaf litter, wearing light-colored clothing, and applying an EPA-registered insect repellent
