Bryan E. Smith, Local Government Professional, to Run for Macon County Clerk
“Macon County taxpayers deserve professionalism at every level of government – professionalism that will guarantee delivering effective and efficient government services,” said Bryan Smith, a 40-year veteran of local, county and state government.
Smith announced today his candidacy for Macon County Clerk. He’s running in the March 17, 2026, Democratic primary, for a chance to win the November 3, 2026, general election.
“I’ve spent my entire career training local government officials to follow the law. If you follow the law with integrity and attention to detail, then you’re delivering services the hard-working taxpayers of this county deserve,” he said. “If you follow the law, integrity follows. That will be my motto as Macon County Clerk.”
The County Clerk’s Office administers Elections, Vital Records (Birth, Death and Marriage), Tax Extension, Tax Redemption and serves as Clerk to the Macon County Board as well as keeper of County records.
“There is no Republican or Democratic way to issue birth, death or marriage certificates. There is no Republican or Democratic way to run fair and accessible elections defined by integrity. The hard-working taxpayers of this county deserve the best,” said Smith, referring to key responsibilities of the Macon County Clerk’s Office.
“I am running to ensure that Macon County residents receive fair, friendly and professional services,” said Smith. “At a time when some have lost confidence in our elections, I am running to restore that lost confidence by governing with integrity that demands the highest standards of excellence.”
Smith, 59, a lifelong resident of Macon County and Long Creek Township, has 40 years of experience in professional government services. From 1996-2021, he was Executive Director/CEO of the Township Officials of Illinois (TOI), and from 1987-1996 Smith served as that organization’s Associate Director. The TOI serves as a resource for state and federal agencies, as well as the township governments across Illinois. After retiring from 35 years at the TOI, Smith started his own local government consulting firm
– BS Consulting. He has been a substitute teacher in Macon County high schools since 2021.
Smith has a strong record of public service as an elected official, including serving as Long Creek Township Clerk (1985-1992, appointed clerk in 2019 & elected again in 2021-2023), Long Creek Township Supervisor (1992-1996), Mt. Zion District Library Trustee (1999-2000) and Macon County Board Member (2002-2020).
He has also served in several appointed public service positions, including Long Creek Fire Protection District Trustee (1997-1998), Macon County Mental Health 708 Board (2007-2024), Macon County Mental Health 708 Board President (2022-2024) and Macon County Board of Review (2022-present).
A lifelong Macon County resident, Smith is a 1987 graduate of Millikin University and a 1983 graduate of Eisenhower High School. He is the father of two daughters, Kayleigh and Kelcie.
