Illinois Leaders React To Chicago Native Being Named Pope
(Chicago, IL) — Leaders in Illinois are reacting after a Chicago native was named Pope. Pope Leo the 14th is the first American Pope in the two-thousand-year history of the Catholic Church. Governor Pritzker called this a historic moment, saying, “Hailing from Chicago, Pope Leo the 14th ushers in a new chapter that I join those in our state welcoming in at a time when we need compassion, unity, and peace.” Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson called this one of the biggest moments in the city’s modern history. Illinois Senate GOP Leader John Curran said, “Congratulations to the Southside’s own Cardinal Robert Prevost on being elected as the new pope.”
