Third Illinois Prison Guard Convicted In Beating Death Of Inmate
A third prison guard is being convicted in the 2018 beating death of an inmate at the Western Illinois Correctional Center in Mt. Sterling. Todd Sheffler was found guilty this week of civil rights deprivation resulting in bodily injury and death and obstruction of justice. Sheffler is lieutenant at the prison. A federal grand jury indicted him, Willie Hedden, and Alex Banta in 2019 with assaulting Larry Earvin. Prosecutors say all three beat Earvin while he was restrained and handcuffed behind his back.
