The manual recount in the contested 2018 Macon County Sheriff’s Election is complete. In a release, Macon County Clerk Josh Tanner says he turned the results over to the Judge overseeing the recount Friday. The report shows the number of unchallenged ballots counted for each candidate, and the number of challenged ballots which have not been counted for either candidate.
The totals show, after the recount, Tony “Chubby” Brown, who was seated as Macon County Sheriff with a 2 vote margin after the election, currently leading challenger Jim Root by 18 votes. However, there are 1,337 ballots contested which have not been assigned to either candidate.
The next step is that the court will now schedule a status hearing to discuss what steps the candidates need to take to conclude the litigation. Tanner says in the release that the information released today is only a report to the court and does not change the outcome of the November 2018 election.
