A bill has been proposed that would prohibit Illinois schools from using Native American themes for logos, mascots or other imagery. However, they will be allowed if the schools follow certain steps in accordance with House Bill 4783. These stipulations are: get written consent from a native tribe within 500 miles of the district. This would have to be renewed every five years.
Offer a course to students that outlines the contributions made to society by Native Americans. Hold a school-wide program twice a year to educate students on Native American culture. Schools would also need to report these programs to the State Board of Education. If these guidelines are not properly followed, the schools will be held out of playoff formats.
