Eisenhower was host to the first State of Decatur Public Schools breakfast. Dr. Paul Fregeau spoke of issues Decatur public schools are facing – such as a shortage of teachers and bus drivers, but he also highlighted some great things like DPS students earning over $5,000,000 in scholarships for their pursuit of higher education over the last two years. He also announced a plan in the works to let high schoolers take enough dual-credit courses to not only graduate with a high school diploma, but also with an associate’s degree.
Dr. Fregeau also spoke about the merger of Thomas Jefferson and Stephan Decatur. He said he understood they’ve had some turbulence but will learn from it whenever they make their next merger plans. The possibility of a merger of Decatur high schools was also mentioned. Fregeau stated that if the schools were to merge that both buildings would continue to be utilized. As an example, one might be used for 9th graders and the other would be used for grades 10 through 12.
It was made clear that this was something he wants input from the community on before any plans are made.
