A student at the University of Illinois, who has been accused of tying and hanging a noose in an elevator at a residence hall, was charged with a hate crime Tuesday. Andrew Smith was reported to school authorities by a woman who claimed to be with Smith when he tied and hung the noose. The noose, found early Sunday, gained attention on social media. Smith was arrested Monday and was charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct and felony hate crime Tuesday.
Smith, a sophomore math student, is now scheduled for another hearing on October 22nd.
