History of the LGBTQ community will now be taught in all Illinois public schools after Gov. JB Pritzker signed the bill into law Friday. The House Bill 246 was sponsored by State Sen. Heather Steans (D-Chicago). Steans’ office issued a press release citing a 2015 study from the Gay, Lesbian, & Straight Education Network, which claims that up to 70 percent of LGBTQ students in Illinois are verbally harassed cause of their sexual orientation, and said that was a defining factor in her choice to pursue the law. The Inclusive Curriculum Bill takes effect July, 1 2020
