Almost 500 Illinoisans have received licenses to begin farming hemp. The state began accepting growing applications back in May.
The majority of the hemp will be used to make CBD oil. CBD oil has gained momentum in being used to treat things such as: insomnia, inflammation and anxiety. This has made farming hemp for CBD the best option. There is a large risk involved with planting hemp because it has not been a cash crop in Illinois for multiple generations.
Many of the farmers who are planting hemp this year have lost much of their spring or summer crops due to the heavy rains and flooding across the region and are using it as a means to get out of the red.
