Students in Illinois who are not in this country legally, and students who do not register for selective service could soon get state help in going to college. The Illinois Senate yesterday passed a plan to offering help to undocumented students, as well as transgender students who don’t register for selective service. Currently neither group is eligible for a MAP grant. Opponents of the plan say it’s unfair to other students to water-down the help they’re getting.
