(Macon, IL) — American Legion Post 72 has selected three outstanding candidates to receive the Lee Holsapple scholarship for dedication, devotion, and determination in illustrating Americanism within the community. The winners for the $500 Lee Holsapple scholarship are Abby Herbert, Benjamin Parks, and Drew Eickhoff.
“We are proud to announce our Lee Holsapple scholarship winners.” Stated Hubert Murray, Scholarship Committee Chair. “These young adults have distinguished themselves through their passionate commitment of Americanism and honoring those that have sacrificed for our freedom.”
The namesake of the scholarship is in honor of retired Macon County Sheriff, Navy veteran, and former American Legion Post 72 Commander Lee Holsapple, whom passed in 2017.
“Like most veterans, Lee was not one to often share his military service; however, we do know Lee served on an icebreaker and his account of that period of service was quite interesting.” Said Post Commander Bob Rutherford “Regardless of his duties Lee served with honor, dedication, devotion, and determination regardless of the mission.”
High school seniors selected are in good standing of Meridian High School. The recipients were selected for their leadership skills, participation in service organizations, clubs, Americanism, and success in essay form.
The scholarship was launched as a result of contributions that were made to American Legion Post 72 in Holsapple’s memory. The Post felt a scholarship fund in honor of Lee Holsapple would be an opportunity to honor Holsapple’s memory and to encourage young adults to esteem the integrity of serving others regardless of their vocation, and career.
