MIAMI (AP) – Matt Carpenter hit his 30th homer for St. Louis, a
tiebreaking drive in the eighth inning. Carpenter connected for the fourth time in five games and increased his career high for home runs. He also extended his streak of reaching base safely to 26 games, the longest active string in the majors. Paul DeJong hit a two-run homer in the seventh for the Cardinals, who have won eight of 12. Miles Mikolas (12-3) pitched seven innings, allowing two runs and five hits.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Mike Montgomery pitched five-hit ball into the seventh inning and David Bote drove in a career-high three runs, leading the Cubs to the win. Montgomery (4-4) picked up his first win since June 29. He is 3-0 with a 0.40 ERA in four appearances against the Royals. The Royals have lost six straight and are 14-43 since May 30.

(Undated) — LeBron James and the Warriors will again headline the NBA’s Christmas Day schedule. Multiple outlets report the Lakers will play defending champion Golden State on December 25th. James has faced the Warriors the last three X-Mas Days as a member of the Cavaliers.

(Las Vegas, NV) — The 76ers continue to have bad luck with rookie injuries. Zhaire [[ zhi-AIR ]] Smith fractured his foot Monday at a developmental camp in Las Vegas. Smith was the 16th overall pick in this year’s draft. Markelle Fultz, Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid [[ jo-ELL em-BEAD ]] also missed all or most of their rookie seasons with injuries.

(Berea, OH) — Browns rookie receiver Antonio Callaway is already having legal issues. He was cited for marijuana possession and driving with a suspended license on Sunday. Cleveland drafted him earlier this year out of Florida. Callaway tested positive for marijuana at the NFL Combine and was also suspended in college for credit card fraud.

(New York, NY) — The WNBA is ruling Las Vegas must forfeit its postponed game at Washington last Friday. The Aces chose not to play after flight delays and cancellations caused nearly 26 hours of travel from Vegas to D.C. The players had concerns over health and safety. The league said it did all it could to make the game viable.
