(Decatur, IL) – The Decatur Park District invites everyone in the community to attend the grand opening of a new mountain bike trail, located adjacent to the Nelson Dog Park and amongst the holes of the disc golf course. A brief ribbon cutting will take place at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30 at the Nelson Park Fitness Pavilion, followed by a demo ride led by Kyle May of Spin City Cycles. Bring your cross or mountain bike along if you’d like to participate.
“An integral element in the Park District’s 2011 Nelson Park master plan, the mountain bike trail offers another opportunity for fitness in Nelson Park,” said Chris Harrison, Decatur Park Board President. “With the DMH fit court, yoga in the fitness pavilion, disc golf, mountain biking, and quick access to the lakefront, Nelson Park is now a destination for activity that improves individuals’ health and quality of life.”
The 1.5-mile single track dirt trail contains 9 obstacles, including smooth rollers, a 4-bump “Nessy,” a snake ladder, and more. The course has a slightly hilly topography but is perfect for beginners to intermediate riders. For more details, email Ryan Raleigh at Ryan@decparks.com.
Riders must wear a helmet and sign a waiver to participate in the demo ride. Road bikes are not advised, as the trail is not paved.
