(Springfield, IL) — The price tag for the state of Illinois’ inability to pay its bills is now over a billion dollars. A number of news outlets reported yesterday that Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza will unveil a report today that details an increase in the cost of the state’s late fees. Mendoza’s report says that since 2015, Illinois’ late payment interest has ballooned to one-point-one-billion-dollars. That’s just late fees on the bills, not the unpaid bills themselves.
