(Urbana, IL) — An Urbana man who went to jail for burning a flag near Independence Day is getting 15-thousand dollars for his troubles. The city of Urbana yesterday agreed to settle Bryton Mellott’s lawsuit. Urbana Police arrested Mellot on July 3rd last year after he posted a picture on Facebook that showed him burning an American flag. Mellott was held for five hours and never charged. Police said at the time that they relied on a 1989 state law that bans flag burning, despite several court cases that have ruled flag burning is protected speech.
