The National Weather Service has issued Winter Weather Advisory for the Decatur, Macon County area that extends into Sunday night. This advisory includes a possibility of a wintery mix of freezing rain and sleet.
The Decatur Police Department encourages motorist to monitor the weather conditions closely over the weekend. Travel could become hazardous due to an accumulation of ice, especially on untreated roadways and elevated surfaces.
Deputy Chief Walker advised in the event you must travel in snow or ice, buckle up, make sure you have plenty of gas, windows are free from obstructions, slow down, plan extra time to get to your destination and give yourself more room to stop. Deputy Chief Walker also encourages all drivers to have a roadside safety kit in the vehicle at all times. This should include cell phone, first aid kit, blankets, flashlight, jumper cables, ice scraper, water and nonperishable foods.
