(Springfield, IL) — Illinois’ debt will begin to grow by leaps and bounds starting Sunday. The state’s temporary budget is set to expire at the end of 2016. Lawmakers say there’s little hope for a new budget anytime soon. The state will continue to collect taxes and pay some bills. But Illinois will lose the legal authority to spend on anything outside of schools, pensions, state worker paychecks, and some mental health programs as of Sunday.
