(Chicago, IL) — Jon Lester took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and the Cubs hung on for a 2-1 win over the Giants at Wrigley Field. The bid was broken up with a solo homer by Hunter Pence with two outs in the seventh. Lester went the distance, pitching a three-hitter to improve to 15-and-4. David Ross had an RBI double and Dexter Fowler a run-scoring single for Chicago, which has won five in-a-row and nine of its last 11 games. Albert Suarez surrendered two runs in five innings to fall to 3-and-3 with the tough-luck loss. Brandon Crawford and Trevor Brown had the other hits for San Francisco.

(Cincinnati, OH) — Eugenio Suarez’s bases loaded RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning pushed the Reds past the Cardinals, 3-2, at the Great American Ballpark. Scott Schebler added a trio of hits and an RBI to help Cincy snap a four-game losing streak. Raisel Iglesias earned the win in relief. St. Louis’ Seung Hwan Oh took the loss, allowing a walk and three hits in the walk-off loss. Yadier Molina and Randal Grichuk each homered in defeat.

(Minneapolis, MN) — Melky Cabrera and Jose Abreu each had three hits and three RBIs as the White Sox hammered the Twins, 11-4, at Target Field. Adam Eaton had four hits, scored four runs and plated one for the South Siders. Carlos Rodon gave up three earned runs over seven innings for the win. Todd Frazier added a two-run home run for Chicago. Brian Dozier belted a three-run homer for Minnesota. Kyle Gibson was tagged with the loss, his ninth.

(Santa Clara, CA) — Following a contentious preseason, Colin Kaepernick appears to be staying with the San Francisco 49ers. CSN Bay Area reports Kaepernick is expected to make the 53-man roster after the final cuts are announced on Saturday. The 28-year-old signal-caller has been on the bubble due to his controversial protest to not stand during the National Anthem. Kaepernick may have solidified his roster spot Thursday night by completing 11-of-18 passes for 103 yards, and adding 38 rushing yards against the San Diego Chargers.
College football returns today and the University of Illinois will open the 2016 season at home against Murray State with kickoff at 2:20 p.m. Illinois State will open tonight in Normal against Valparaiso with kickoff at 6 p.m.
