Illinois was no match for 12th-ranked Maryland in an 81-55 road loss. Maverick Morgan had a career night with 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Illini, who dropped to 13-and-17. Illinois ends the regular season at Penn State Sunday.
Number-16 Arizona scored the game’s final 11 points to rally for a 64-61 win over 25th-ranked Cal. The Wildcats avoided their first three-game slide since the 2009-10 season and ended Cal’s seven-game winning streak.
The Colts have made a qualifying offer to tight end Jack Doyle, who is a restricted free agent. If another team makes an offer to Doyle, the Colts have 10 days to match or they’ll receive draft pick compensation. Doyle is an Indianapolis native and attended Cathedral High School before playing collegiately at Western Kentucky. He has caught 35 passes for 209 yards and three touchdowns in three seasons with the Colts.
The Texans are parting ways with their all-time leading rusher. The team has released running back Arian Foster after seven seasons. The four-time Pro Bowl selection totaled 6,472 yards rushing and 54 touchdowns during his tenure in Houston.
The Bruins doubled up the Blackhawks, 4-2, last night in Boston. Tomas Fleischmann and Jonathan Toews [[ taves ]] had the goals for Chicago, which had won its previous two. Scott Darling allowed all four scores on 25 shots. The ‘Hawks host the Red Wings Sunday.
Jaromir Jagr tied Gordie Howe for third on the all-time points list in the Panthers’ 3-2 loss to the Avalanche. Jagr had an assist to give him 1,850 career points. The 44-year-old Jagr is 37 points behind Mark Messier for second.
Carlos Peguero had two hits and an RBI in the Cardinals’ 4-3 Grapefruit League win over the Marlins in Jupiter. Tyler Lyons allowed one run over three innings for St. Louis. They face the Astros this afternoon.
The Cubs suffered a 2-1 loss to the Brewers in the Cactus League opener. Starter Travis Wood allowed a run and a hit in two innings of work. The Cubs open the home portion of their Cactus League slate against the Angels this afternoon.
The White Sox were beaten by the Dodgers, 6-1, in their Cactus League opener yesterday. Chicago starting pitcher John Danks allowed three runs and four hits in only two innings. The Sox host the Indians today.
Alex Rodriguez hit a two-run homer in his first spring at-bat in the Yankees’ 13-4 loss to the Phillies. “A-Rod” went deep on the second pitch in his Grapefruit League debut. The 40-year-old enters the season 13 away from 700 career homers.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is in Las Vegas for the Kobalt 400. Qualifying at Las Vegas Motor Speedway is this evening, with the 267-lap, 400-mile race to follow on Sunday. Last year’s race was won by Kevin Harvick.
