Bed bugs are apparently to blame for Kyrie Irving’s early exit in Sunday’s game against the Thunder. The Cavs’ guard says he was bitten in his hotel room in Oklahoma City and didn’t get any sleep. Irving played only nine minutes in Sunday’s win.
The Sharks raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first period and breezed past the Blues, 6-3, in St. Louis. David Backes, Vladimir Tarasenko and Jay Bouwmeester lit the lamp for St. Louis, which had won five in-a-row. Blues goaltender Brian Elliott had to leave in the first period with a lower-body injury. The Blues will host the Rangers on Thursday.
In college hoops last night, 11th-ranked Miami held on for a 64-61 home win over number-three Virginia. Number-12 West Virginia withstood a second-half surge and downed 17th-ranked Iowa State, 97-87. Number-25 Texas escaped with a 71-70 road win over Kansas State.
Players and team personnel are arriving in Indianapolis today for the NFL Scouting Combine. The annual showcase of top college prospects gives teams a chance to evaluate players ahead of this year’s NFL Draft. The first on-field workouts are Friday.
The White Sox are taking a flyer on former National League MVP Jimmy Rollins. The Sox have agreed to a minor league contract with the 37-year-old shortstop. Rollins hit just .224 with 13 home runs and 41 RBI last year for the Dodgers.
The Cubs have signed veteran pitcher Manny Parra to a minor league deal. The 33-year-old Parra was 1-and-2 with a 3.90 ERA in 40 appearances for the Reds last season.
As full-squad spring training workouts begin this week in Florida and Arizona, the Cubs are the early favorite in Las Vegas to go all way. The Westgate Superbook lists the Cubs at 4-to-1 to capture their first World Series title since 1908.
Illinois returns to the court Thursday night at home against 15th-ranked Indiana. The Fighting Illini fell 69-60 at Wisconsin on Sunday, their third loss in four games. Illinois is 12-and-15 overall and 4-and-10 in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers won the first matchup 103-69 on January 19th.
