The NFL is returning to Los Angeles. League owners overwhelmingly voted in favor of the Rams moving from St. Louis to the LA area for the upcoming season. Los Angeles has been without an NFL team since the Rams and Raiders left after the 1994 season.
The Rams leaving town is a second blow to St. Louis. The city first lost the Cardinals to Phoenix, Arizona after the 1987 season. They had played in St. Louis since 1960. The city was then without a team until the Rams relocated from Los Angeles in time for the 1995 season.
The Chargers and Raiders are staying put for now. The Chargers have been given the option to join the Rams in Inglewood, while the Raiders withdrew their application for relocation during yesterday’s meetings.
It’s unclear if Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger [[ ROTH-lis-ber-ger ]] will be able to play in Sunday’s playoff game against the Broncos. “Big Ben” told Pittsburgh’s 93.7 The Fan that he has torn ligaments and a sprained AC joint in his throwing shoulder. He says he’s day-to-day.
Colts free agent kicker Adam Vinatieri says he’s not ready to hang up his cleats just yet. The 43-year-old veteran told ESPN.com that he will kick as long as a team will have him. Vinatieri made his final 25 field goal attempts of the season and has 2,253 points scored during his 20-year career.
Cubs ace and NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta filed for salary arbitration yesterday. The 29-year-old Arrieta earned just over 3.6-million dollars last year. He went 22-and-6 with a 1.77 ERA.
The Cardinals are beefing up their video boards at Busch Stadium. They have unveiled plans for a multi-million-dollar upgrade to high-definition LED screens for the now 10-year-old stadium. The Cards were motivated after seeing the new video boards at Chicago’s Wrigley Field.
The red-hot Blackhawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held on for the 3-2 win over the Predators. Andrew Shaw scored twice to help Chicago extend its winning streak to eight games. Brent Seabrook also scored and Corey Crawford made 41 saves. Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville tied Al Arbour for second on the all-time wins list with his 782nd victory. The ‘Hawks are at Montreal tomorrow night.
The Blackhawks are rewarding head coach Joel Quenneville [[ KWEN-vill ]] with a three-year contract extension. His deal now runs through the 2019-20 season. Quenneville is in his eighth year with the Blackhawks, and has won three Stanley Cups in the last six seasons.
Patrik Berglund scored twice as the Blues blasted the Devils 5-2 at Scottrade Center. Scottie Upshall, Ty Rattie and David Backes [[ BACK-es ]] also lit the lamp for the Blues, who have won two in-a-row. Brian Elliott made 22 saves in the victory. The Blues host the Hurricanes tomorrow night.
The Bucks pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 106-101 win over the Bulls. Jimmy Butler ended with 30 points, eight rebounds and six assists for Chicago. The Bulls have dropped three straight on the heels of a six-game winning streak. The Bulls visit the 76ers tomorrow night.
Bulls guard Derrick Rose didn’t make it through last night’s loss to the Bucks. Rose exited for good late in the fourth quarter due to left patellar tendinitis. He originally left the first time in the third quarter.
A trio of ranked teams went down in college hoops last night. A day after being named number-one in the “USA Today” poll, Kansas suffered a 74-63 loss to West Virginia. Michigan topped third-ranked Maryland, 70-67, while Texas trimmed number-18 Iowa State in overtime, 94-91.
Ronda Rousey’s highly-anticipated return to the octagon is on hold. UFC president Dana White tells Yahoo! Sports that Rousey will not compete at UFC 200 in July as expected. Rousey has been out of action since being stunned by Holly Holm in November.
