The Tom Coughlin era in the Meadowlands is over. The 69-year-old resigned as head coach of the Giants yesterday. Coughlin won a pair of Super Bowls during his 12-year tenure with the team.
Chuck Pagano is staying in Indianapolis after all. Colts owner Jim Irsay announced the head coach would return at a press conference last night. It was widely expected that the Colts would dismiss Pagano, who has had a contentious relationship with general manager Ryan Grigson. Both Pagano and Grigson are now under contract for the next four years and denied any serious issues between them.
The NFL could be returning to Los Angeles in the very near future. The league says the Chargers, Raiders and Rams have all filed for relocation to the LA area beginning with the 2016 season. What happens next is in the hands of NFL owners, who are scheduled to meet in Houston next week.
Bobby Ryan scored the winning goal 2:33 into overtime as the Senators beat the Blues 3-2 at Scottrade Center. Troy Brouwer and Kevin Shattenkirk scored for the Blues, who have dropped three in-a-row. Brian Elliott allowed all three goals on 32 shots in the setback. The Blues open a three-game road trip tomorrow at Colorado.
Perry Ellis had 27 points and 13 rebounds as second-ranked Kansas outlasted number-one Oklahoma in triple-overtime, 109-106. The Jayhawks upped their record to 13-and-1. Buddy Hield had 46 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in Oklahoma’s first loss of the year.
On a wild night in college hoops, Brice Johnson scored 39 points and grabbed 23 rebounds to lead seventh-ranked North Carolina to a 106-90 win over Florida State. Fourth-ranked Virginia fell on the road to Virginia Tech, 70-68.
Illinois will try again Thursday for its first Big Ten win of the season at fifth-ranked Michigan State. The Fighting Illini are off to an 0-and-2 start in conference play with losses to Michigan and Ohio State. Illinois is 8-and-7 overall. The Spartans are 14-and-1, losing to Iowa last week.
