The Rams were no match for the first-place Cardinals, losing 27-3 at home on Sunday. The Rams surrendered 524 yards of offense and dropped their fifth straight game to slip to 4-and-8 on the year. It was their first NFC West loss in four tries this season. The Rams host the 4-and-8 Lions this Sunday.
The Steelers scored 39 unanswered points in a 45-10 blowout of the Colts on “Sunday Night Football”. Matt Hasselbeck passed for 169 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions for the Colts, who dropped to 6-and-6. Indy will visit the Jaguars on Sunday.
Blaine Gabbert’s 71-yard touchdown pass to Torrey Smith in overtime gave the 49ers a 26-20 win over the Bears. Jay Cutler threw for 202 yards and a pick-six for the Bears, who slipped to 5-and-7. Robbie Gould missed two field goals, including a 36-yarder at the end of regulation. The Bears host Washington on Sunday.
The Patriots blew a 14-0 lead in a 35-28 loss to the Eagles in Foxboro. The Patriots have dropped two straight games for the first time since 2012. Philadelphia scored 35 straight points in the victory.
Cam Newton’s 15-yard touchdown pass to Jerricho Cotchery with just over a minute to go gave the unbeaten Panthers a 41-38 win over the Saints. Newton threw for 331 yards and five scores for Carolina, which became only the ninth team to start a season 12-and-0 in NFL history.
It was a rough day for kickers around the NFL. A total of eight extra points were missed during Sunday’s games. Kickers missed eight extra points under the old rules all of last season.
The College Football Playoff is set. Top-ranked Clemson will clash with number-four Oklahoma in one semifinal, while third-ranked Michigan State will square off with second-ranked Alabama in the other. Both games are on New Year’s Eve.
Patrick Kane extended his points streak to a franchise-record 22 games in the Blackhawks’ 3-1 win over the Jets. Kane broke the record held by Bobby Hull with an assist on Artemi Panarin’s goal. Marian Hossa and Teuvo Teravainen also lit the lamp to help Chicago stop a three-game skid. Corey Crawford made 30 saves. The ‘Hawks host Nashville tomorrow night.
The Warriors ran their record to 22-and-0 with a 114-98 win over the Nets. Steph Curry scored 28 points for Golden State, which has won 26 straight regular-season games dating back to last season. The Warriors face the Pacers tomorrow night.
Major League Baseball’s Winter Meetings begin today Nashville, Tennessee. Representatives from the Cardinals, Cubs, White Sox and the other 27 clubs will be on hand through Thursday to discuss potential trades and free-agent signings. The Cardinals have already lost pitcher John Lackey to the Cubs.
