The Patriots kept their perfect record intact by the slimmest of margins. Stephen Gostkowski’s [[ gust-OW-ski ]] 54-yard field goal with one second left gave the Patriots a 27-26 win over the Giants. New England improved to 9-and-0 with the win.
Jay Cutler threw for 258 yards and three touchdowns as the Bears ripped the Rams, 37-13, in St. Louis. Jeremy Langford had 182 total yards and two scores for Chicago, which has won two straight to improve to 4-and-5. The Bears host the Broncos on Sunday.
Peyton Manning’s historic day quickly turned into one of the worst of his professional career. The Bronco quarterback eclipsed Brett Favre’s NFL record for the most career passing yards in the first quarter of Sunday’s game against the Chiefs. However, Manning was benched in the second half after going 5-of-20 for 35 yards and four interceptions. Denver lost the game, 29-13.
There’s a new leader in the NFC North. The Vikings ran their winning streak to five games with a 30-14 victory over the Raiders. The win, coupled with Green Bay’s first home loss to the Lions since 1991, leaves Minnesota alone atop the division.
In college basketball yesterday, Illinois improved to 1-and-1 with an 80-74 win over North Dakota State. The Millikin Women’s Basketball team opens their season with a 75-63 win over Monmouth Sunday. Alyssa Saklak scored 30 points and Devin Curry scored 21 to lead Millikin in the win.
College Football from Saturday saw Illinois fall to Ohio State 28-3, and Millikin falls 42-10 to Augustana. Millikin also saw Head Coach Patrick Etherton step down Saturday following the game. Etherton, who spent 12 years coaching at Millikin finishes with a 16-34 record after five seasons as the head coach.
