Baseball legend Yogi Berra has passed away at age 90. The Yankee icon won three American League MVP awards and 10 World Series championships during his playing days. The 15-time All-Star was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972.
The Cowboys have acquired veteran quarterback Matt Cassel from the Bills. The move came on the same day Dallas placed Tony Romo on injured reserve with a designation to return. Romo will miss at least seven games with a broken collarbone.
The Bears have called up quarterback David Fales from the practice squad. It’s expected the Fales will serve as the backup to Jimmy Clausen when the Bears take on the Seahawks on Sunday. Jay Cutler is expected to miss the game with a hamstring injury.
Jake Arrieta fired a three-hitter to lead the Cubs to a 4-0 win over the Brewers. Arrieta struck out 11 en route to his 20th win of the year. Arrieta is the first Cub with 20 wins since Jon Lieber in 2001. Kris Bryant also set the team’s rookie record with his 26th homer of the season.
Tommy Pham drove in two to help the Cardinals beat the Reds, 3-1, in the second of three at Busch Stadium. Matt Carpenter had two hits and scored a run, while John Lackey picked up his 13th win with seven innings of one-run ball. Steve Cishek grabbed his fourth save as St. Louis has won three straight. The Cards magic number to win the NL Central is eight.
The Tigers took a combined no-hitter into the ninth before pulling out a 2-1, 10-inning win over the White Sox. Tyler Saladino tripled off Neftali Feliz with one out in the ninth to break up the bid. Saladino then scored the tying run before Rajai Davis drilled a game-winning RBI triple in the 10th.
