The Cardinals scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to rally for a 2-1 win over the Reds in St. Louis. Jhonny Peralta singled in the tying run in the frame, while Stephen Piscotty’s RBI double put the Redbirds ahead. Jonathan Broxton picked up the win in relief. Trevor Rosenthal closed it out for his 47th save. St. Louis remains four games ahead of the Pirates in the NL Central.
Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright is cleared for baseball activities. He’s been out with a torn left Achilles since April but could work out of the bullpen in the playoffs. Meanwhile, catcher Yadier Molina has partially torn ligament in his left thumb. The team is hopeful he’ll return before October.
Jorge Soler smacked a pinch-hit three-run homer as the Cubs bashed the Brewers, 9-5, at Wrigley Field. Starlin Castro drove in two for the Cubs, who have won six of their last seven. Jason Hammel permitted four runs, three earned, in five innings as he moved to 9-and-6. Chicago’s magic number to clinch a playoff spot is down to four. The second of the three-game series is tonight.
The White Sox swept a doubleheader with the Tigers at Comerica Park. Jeff Samardzija [[ suh-MAR-juh ]] fired a complete-game one-hitter to lead Chicago to a 2-0 win in the opener. Gordon Beckham belted a solo homer to help power the Sox to a 3-2 win in the nightcap.
The Jets forced five turnovers in a 20-7 win over the Colts on “Monday Night Football”. Andrew Luck threw for 250 yards and a touchdown, but had three interceptions and a fumble in the loss. Donte Moncrief made seven grabs for 122 yards and a TD for Indianapolis, which dropped to 0-and-2 for the second straight year.
The Bears could be without starting quarterback Jay Cutler for the near future. ESPN reports Cutler will miss at least two weeks after suffering a strained hamstring in Chicago’s loss Sunday to the Cardinals. Backup Jimmy Clausen is expected to start in his place this weekend in Seattle.
