The Cubs split a doubleheader with the Pirates in Pittsburgh. After suffering a 5-4 loss in the opener, Jon Lester went the distance to lead Chicago to a 2-1 win in the nightcap. Lester logged his first complete game of the season.
Jason Heyward’s two-run homer in the top of the 10th lifted the Cardinals to a 3-1 win over the Brewers. Jhonny Peralta smacked an RBI single for St. Louis, which became the first team with 90 wins this season. The Redbirds also increased their lead on the Pirates in the NL Central to three games. Kevin Siegrist earned the win in relief of Carlos Martinez, who struck out nine over eight innings of one-run ball. Trevor Rosenthal logged his 44th save.
St. Louis and San Diego representatives won’t be making stadium presentations to try and keep their NFL teams at next month’s owners meetings. The league’s Los Angeles point man says the agenda is full and the NFL will likely talk to the cities directly over the next several weeks.
The hand injury to Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul may be worse than originally thought. ESPN reports he is missing the tip of his thumb and recently had another procedure performed on his right middle finger. “JPP” also had his right index finger amputated after a fireworks accident on the Fourth of July.
