Jeff Brantly belted a three-run homer and the White Sox cruised to a 7-4 win over the Indians at U.S. Cellular Field. Jose Abreu went 3-for-4 with a homer, two runs and two RBI for Chicago, which has won five of six. Carlos Rodon tossed seven innings of one-run ball to improve to 7-and-6.
The Patriots’ spying on other teams may have been more widespread than originally thought. ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” says the Pats secretly recorded other teams’ signals in at least 40 games from 2000 through 2007. Commissioner Roger Goodell originally said there were tapes of six games.
The Bears are hopeful top wide receiver Alshon Jeffery will be ready for the season opener Sunday against Green Bay. NFL Network reports Jeffery is “progressing well” from a calf injury. He sat out practice on Monday and has been sidelined since early August.
Serena Williams is through to the semifinals at the U.S. Open after defeating sister Venus in three sets. Serena captured a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 win over Venus at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Serena is two wins away from becoming the first calendar-year Grand Slam champion since Steffi Graf in 1988.
Tuesday’s scheduled grand jury investigation into rape allegations against Blackhawks star Patrick Kane were postponed. According to the “Buffalo News”, the postponement may be because of ongoing settlement talks between representatives for Kane and the alleged victim.
The NBA is making changes to playoff seedings. The league will now seed teams solely by their record, throwing out the top-four protection for teams who win their divisions. Teams will now be seeded one to eight by their win-loss record.
