Matt Carpenter added an insurance tally on an RBI single. John Lackey improved to 11-and-8 with seven innings of one-run ball and Trevor Rosenthal locked up his 40th save.
Buster Posey doubled in a run and scored another in the sixth as the Giants cooled off the Cubs with a 4-2 win. Kris Bryant doubled home a pair in the first for Chicago, which had won six in-a-row and lost for only the fifth time in its last 26 games. Kyle Hendricks allowed all four runs in six frames to fall to 6-and-6. The teams wrap up the three-game series this afternoon.
The White Sox suffered a 3-0 loss to the Red Sox in the rubber match of a three-game set at U.S. Cellular Field. Chris Sale tossed struck out seven over seven scoreless innings. Nate Jones allowed a Travis Shaw two-run homer in the eighth to take the loss.
Justin Verlander lost his bid for a no-hitter in the ninth inning of the Tigers’ 5-0 win over the Angels. Chris Iannetta led off the top of the ninth with a double that hit the chalk down the left-field line to end Verlander’s bid for a third career no-no.
The Twins now have control of the second Wild Card spot in the American League. Minnesota ran its winning streak to six with a 5-3 victory over the Rays last night. The Twins hold a half-game lead on the Rangers for the second AL Wild Card spot.
Bulls star Derrick Rose is trying to clear his name. TMZ reports Rose is being sued by a woman that claims she was drugged and raped by Rose and two of his friends. Rose’s spokesperson called the allegations “completely false” and the lawsuit “outrageous”.
The 2015 FedExCup Playoffs begin this morning with the opening round of The Barclays in New Jersey. Jordan Spieth enters play atop the points list, but points reset during the playoffs. The winner of the four-event playoffs will take home 10-million dollars.
The injury bug has bitten another NFL team. ESPN reports Washington will be without linebacker Junior Galette for the season after the linebacker tore his Achilles in practice Wednesday. Galette joined Washington after being released by the Saints this summer.
Former 49ers defensive lineman Ray McDonald has been indicted on a felony rape charge by a grand jury in Santa Clara County. Current Niners linebacker Ahmad Brooks has also been charged with misdemeanor sexual battery for an alleged assault involving the same woman in the McDonald case on the same day.
Not all Steelers fans are happy with the signing of quarterback Michael Vick. A handful of protestors gathered outside of the team’s practice facility on “National Dog Day” to express their displeasure. Vick finished his prison sentence for his role in a dogfighting ring six years ago.
St. Louis native and FOX play-by-play man Joe Buck is ripping Rams owner Stan Kroenke [[ KRON-kee ]] for his desire to move the team to LA. He tweeted, “Suck the life out of a team, run it down, raise prices, then say it isn’t supported and leave. Great example for the NFL to celebrate.”
