New Trials Ordered For Men Accused In Cyclists Death

(Decatur, IL) -- Two men convicted in 2011 for the stomping death of a 61-year-old bicyclist will be heading back to court. A state appeals court has ruled that 20-year-old Elliott Murphy will receive a new trial due to a conflict of interest involving his lawyer. Eighteen-year-old Deonta Johnson’s case is pending review before the state Supreme Court. Both men were convicted of beating Jerry Newingham to death a few blocks away from DMH back in 2009.
