(Quincy, IL) — The western Illinois coroner who demanded a thousand dollars from low-income families to claim their loved one’s remains is stepping down. Adams County Chairman Les Post said Thursday that Coroner Jim Keller will leave his job on July 10th. Keller came under fire this spring, including from the state’s comptroller, for refusing to release remains unless he was paid. Post said he hopes to have a new coroner in place before Keller leaves next month.
