(Decatur, IL) — Motor vehicle injuries are the leading cause of death among children in the United States. Many of these deaths are preventable. Placing children in age and size-appropriate car seats and booster seats reduce serious and fatal injuries by more than half.
HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital will hold a free car seat safety check in association with the Illinois Department of Transportation on Friday, June 22, from 9 a.m. to noon. in the cancer care center parking lot, located at 1990 East Lake Shore Drive There will be directional signage.
St. Mary’s also offers a few guidelines to help select the safest car seat for your child:
- Choose the correct car seat. Children should remain in a rear-facing car seat at least until two years old.
- Be sure to install car seats correctly. Take time to read the owner manuals for both your vehicle and your car seat or go to a car seat safety event like ours.
- Choose the best fitting car seat. A properly fitted car seat is the safest option for your child.
- Know when to change your car seat. Look on the car seat label to make sure your child is still within the weight, height and age limits for that seat.
