(Decatur, IL) — On Monday night, at approximately 5:01 p.m. Decatur Police responded to a traffic accident which occurred on South Franklin Street near the intersection of Decatur Street.
After arriving on the scene, officers had discovered that a 75-year-old Decatur man had run into the back of a pickup truck operated by a 44-year-old Clinton man. The driver of the truck was the only person in the vehicle and was uninjured. After the man had made contact with the pickup truck, the driver of the passenger car then began driving in reverse and ultimately struck a utility pole on the west side of Franklin Street. The driver of the car was found to unresponsive at the scene.
The 75-year-old Decatur man was transported by Decatur Ambulance Service to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. It appears at this time that the man suffered from a medical event prior to the accident. Macon County Coroner’s office was contacted and responded to the hospital.
The crash is currently being investigated by the Fatal Accident Investigation Team. All northbound traffic was diverted to eastbound Cantrell St. for approximately 4 hours. No other information is known at this time.
