(Normal, IL) — A new report says almost half the high school graduates in the state leave Illinois for college. “The Bloomington Pantagraph” reported yesterday that 46 percent of Illinois high school graduates in 2016 went to college in another state. The paper says just 29 percent of high school grads left the state in 2002. Why the big jump? Lawmakers and university officials say cost, competition, and a general exodus from Illinois all play a bit of a role.
