Oklahoma’s Mayfield Wins Heisman Trophy
(New York, NY) — Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield is the winner of the 2017 Heisman Memorial Trophy. Mayfield beat out Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson and Stanford running back Bryce Love. Mayfield earned the award after finishing third in voting last season, when Jackson won it for the Cardinals. The senior threw for over 43-hundred yards and 41 touchdowns for 12-and-1 Oklahoma, which won the Big 12 and faces Georgia in the College Football Playoff Semifinals on New Year’s Day. Mayfield is the sixth Sooner to win the Heisman.
Bulls Edge Knicks For Second Straight Win
(Chicago, IL) — Kris Dunn nailed a pair of free throws with two seconds left as the Bulls edged the Knicks, 104-102, in Chicago. Dunn finished with 17 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds. Nikola Mirotic [[ KNEE-coal-uh MIR-oh-tich ]] nailed five three-pointers and put up 19 as Chicago won consecutive games for the first time this season. Kristaps Porzingis [[ CHRIS-taps por-ZING-is ]] tied the game on a jumper with eight seconds left and scored 23 for New York. The Knicks are just 1-and-8 away from home.
Blues Hammer Red Wings
(Detroit, MI) — The Blues pushed their win streak to three games as they hammered the Red Wings, 6-1, in Detroit. St. Louis pulled away with a three-goal second period. Brayden Schenn and Jay Bouwmeester each tallied a goal and an assist for the Blues. Jake Allen finished with 28 saves. Jimmy Howard gave up four goals on 10 shots for Detroit before getting replaced with Petr Mrazek. Frans Nielsen scored the lone goal for the Red Wings, who have lost eight of their past nine games.
Boston College Upsets Duke
(Boston, MA) — Ky Bowman fell just short of a triple-double for Boston College, which upset top-ranked Duke, 89-84, in Boston Saturday. Bowman finished with 30 points, ten rebounds and nine assists for the Eagles, who improved to 7-and-3. Jordan Chatman and Jerome Robinson combined to shoot 10-of-14 from beyond the arc for BC. Gary Trent Junior led the Blue Devils with 25 points. Marvin Bagley the Third added 15 points and 12 boards as Duke fell to 11-and-1 and 0-and-1 in the ACC.
Arkansas Upsets Minnesota
(Fayetteville, AR) — Jaylen Barford led the Razorbacks with 22 points as they upset number-15 Minnesota, 95-79, in Fayetteville. Daniel Gafford added 16 points for Arkansas, which shot 57-percent from the field in the win. The Razorbacks opened up an eight-point lead at halftime, and pulled away in the second half to improve to 7-and-2. Jordan Murphy led the Golden Gophers with 20 points and 10 boards. Minnesota started the year 7-and-0, but has since gone 1-and-3.
Wolverines Rally Past Bruins In OT
(Ann Arbor, MI) — Michigan rallied from a 15-point second-half deficit to stun number-23 UCLA in overtime, 78-69, in Ann Arbor. Moritz Wagner scored 23 points and Charles Matthews added 20 in the winning effort. The Wolverines overcame an 8-of-22 performance from the free-throw line to improve to 8-and-3. Aaron Holiday paced the Bruins with 27 points. Thomas Welsh pitched in 22 points of his own as UCLA fell to 7-and-2.
