Even though the new plates are just being introduced, the Secretary of State’s Office has heard the complaints and is already planning to tweak them to make them more legible, according to Dave Druker, the office’s spokesman.
White said in November that the state is replacing the old plates because they were becoming less reflective over time, making it hard for police to see the plates.
Ed Wojcicki, executive director of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, said the new plate design from a law enforcement standpoint is not an issue.
“We’re certainly not going to comment about the design, we aren’t graphic designers,” Wojcicki said. “Our only interest is in whether we can read the numbers and letters on the plate, and we can. So from that standpoint, we don’t have any problem.”
