State Supreme Court To Decide If Hospitals Should Pay Property Taxes

(Springfield, IL)  —  The Illinois Supreme Court will decide if a law allowing not-for-profit hospitals in the state to skip paying property taxes is constitutional.  Hospital and municipal leaders laid out their arguments yesterday before the state’s highest court.  Illinois not-for-profit hospitals are currently exempt from property taxes as long as the value of their services is equal or greater than their tax liabilities.  Hospitals say the exemptions help them meet their communities’ health care needs.
