Champaign- Car accidents with deer see large jump in the fall months, with the highest risk of an accident coming in November.
The increase in car accidents coincides with harvest season, as deer have to travel farther to find food sources. “During harvest those food sources get more limited so they have to actually travel to go from one source to another” said Julia Whittington, Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Another reason for the increased sighting in deer during the fall months, is due to mating season. “It usually occurs in late October, but this year has been unusually warm, so it has been pushed back a little.”
