>>Cubs Clip Giants In 13

(Chicago, IL)  —  Jason Heyward’s RBI single in the bottom of the 13th gave the Cubs a 3-2 win over the Giants.  Heyward smacked three RBI singles for Chicago, which took three-of-four in the series.  Trevor Cahill [[ KAY-hill ]] earned the win.

(Milwaukee, WI)  —  The Cubs open a three-game series with the Brewers today in Milwaukee.  Chicago is an MLB-best 88-and-48 on the season.  Kyle Hendricks gets the start on the mound for the Cubs.  Milwaukee counters with Zach Davies.

>>Cardinals Avoid Sweep At Hands Of Reds

(Cincinnati, OH)  —  Carlos Martinez pitched six-plus innings of two-run ball for his 13th win as the Cardinals beat the Reds 5-2 in Cincinnati.  Randall Grichuk hit a two-run home run and Kolten Wong added a solo shot for St. Louis, which had only five hits but avoided a three-game sweep.

(Pittsburgh, PA)  —  The Cardinals will celebrate Labor Day in the Steel City.  They open a three-game series today at Pittsburgh.  Adam Wainwright will start for St. Louis, while Chad Kuhl goes for the Bucs.  First pitch is at 3 p.m.  The Cards lead the Mets by one game for the second NL wild card.

>>White Sox Top Twins In 12

(Minneapolis, MN)  —  Tim Anderson’s two-run double in the 12th pushed the White Sox to a 13-11 win over the Twins.  Jose Abreu homered twice and plated a career-high seven to help Chicago earn a split in the four-game set.  Juan Minaya got the win and Tommy Kahnle earned his first save.

(Chicago, IL)  —  The White Sox open a three-game set with the Tigers on the Southside today.  Chicago is 65-and-71 on the year.  Chris Sale toes the rubber for the Sox.  The Tigers will send out Justin Verlander.

>>Texas Tops Notre Dame In Double-Overtime

(Austin, TX)  —  Tyrone Swoopes’ six-yard touchdown run in the second overtime gave Texas a thrilling 50-47 win over ninth-ranked Notre Dame.  DeShone Kizer threw five touchdown passes and ran in for another score for the Irish in defeat.  Notre Dame hosts Nevada on Saturday.

(Undated)  —  Elsewhere in college football, the Lovie Smith era at Illinois opened with a 52-3 mauling of Murray State in Champaign.  Northwestern was upset at home by Western Michigan, 22-21.

>>Mizzou Loses On Road, Illinois Wins At Home In Lovie Debut

(Undated)  —  In college football openers on Saturday, Missouri scored its only touchdown in the final two minutes in a 26-11 setback at West Virginia.  In Champaign, Wes Lunt threw three touchdown passes as Illinois annihilated Murray State 52-3 in Lovie Smith’s Illini coaching debut.

>>Colts Trim Roster, Prep For Lions

(Indianapolis, IN)  —  The Colts have trimmed their roster down to 53 players and now begin prepping for Sunday’s opener against the Lions.  The Colts claimed defensive backs Neiko Thorpe and Matthias Farley off of waivers and also filled out their 10-man practice squad.

(Indianapolis, IN)  —  The Pacers have signed center Kevin Seraphin to boost their post presence.  Seraphin agreed to a two-year, 3.6-million-dollar deal with Indiana over the weekend.  The 26-year-old Seraphin averaged 3.9 points and 2.6 rebounds for the Knicks last season.

(Rosemont, IL)  —  The Chicago Sky ran their win streak to four games with a 97-73 rout of the San Antonio Stars.  Elena Delle Donne scored 35 points for Chicago, which improved to 15-and-13.  The Sky visit the Washington Mystics on Wednesday.

>>Casey Leads Deutsche Bank Championship

(Norton, MA)  —  Paul Casey has a three-shot lead entering today’s final round of the Deutsche Bank Championship.  Casey is 15-under-par through three rounds at TPC Boston.  Brian Harman is alone in second at 12-under.
