(Englewood, CO) — The Broncos have found their heir apparent to Peyton Manning. Trevor Siemian will start at quarterback when the Broncos open the season against the Panthers next week. Siemian beat out rookie Paxton Lynch and Mark Sanchez to replace the retired Manning.

(San Diego, CA) — The Chargers finally have their 2016 first-round draft pick under contract. The team has signed rookie defensive end Joey Bosa [[ BO-suh ]] to a four-year deal. The two sides were in a stalemate over payment of Bosa’s 17-million-dollar signing bonus and offset language in the contract.

(Milwaukee, WI) — Stephen Piscotty scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error in the top of the ninth inning as the Cardinals clipped the Brewers 6-5 at Miller Park. Randal Grichuk clubbed a two-run homer in the eighth to tie the game for St. Louis, which was coming off a 2-and-4 homestand. Jedd Gyorko and Kolten Wong also went deep in the victory. Miguel Socolovich picked up his first win and Seung Hwan Oh notched his 14th save.

(Chicago, IL) — Miguel Montero’s pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the 13th gave the Cubs a wild 8-7 win over the Pirates. Chicago rallied for two runs in the 13th after Josh Harrison’s sac-fly had given Pittsburgh the lead. Jorge Soler forced extras with a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth. Rob Zastryzny earned his first career win. The Cubs and Pirates play again tonight at 7:05 p.m.
>>Tigers Trim White Sox
(Detroit, MI) — Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s go-ahead two-run homer in the eighth powered the Tigers to a 4-3 win over the White Sox. Tyler Saladino homered and drove in all three runs for Chicago. James Shields tossed six innings of two-run ball. Nate Jones blew the lead and suffered his third loss.

(Flushing, NY) — Yoenis Cespedes’ solo shot in the bottom of the 10th gave the Mets a 2-1 win over the Marlins. New York has won seven of its last nine games. Both teams are two-and-a-half games behind St. Louis for the second NL Wild Card spot.
>>Colts Continue Roster Cuts
(Indianapolis, IN) — The Colts are continuing to cut players to get down to the league’s 75-man limit. Indianapolis parted ways with tight end Konrad Reuland, wide receiver Daniel Anthrop, tackle Keith Lumpkin and running back Trey Williams. Indy ends preseason play against the Bengals Thursday.

(Flushing Meadows, NY) — Day One of the U.S. Open is in the books. Men’s top seed Novak Djokovic overcame a balky arm for a four-set win. Fourth-seeded Rafael Nadal and American John Isner also posted first-round victories.
