Randall Grichuk hit a solo homer for St. Louis, which is three-and-a-half games ahead of New York in the wild card standings. Jaime Garcia allowed six runs in only four innings to fall to 10-and-9.

(San Diego, CA) — Jake Arrieta tossed eight shutout innings and the Cubs held on for a 5-3 win over the Padres. Arrieta scattered two hits and three walks while striking out six to improve to 16-and-5. Addison Russell and Kris Bryant homered for Chicago, which is 80-and-45 on the year. The teams close out the three-game series this afternoon.

(Chicago, IL) — Jose Abreu homered and plated three as the White Sox pounded the Phillies, 9-1. Justin Morneau launched a solo shot in Chicago’s third straight win. Carlos Rodon tossed six-and-two-thirds innings of three-hit, shutout ball to improve to 4-and-8.

(Cincinnati, OH) — The Rangers are placing injured outfielder Josh Hamilton on unconditional release waivers. The 35-year-old hasn’t played this year while recovering from a series of operations on his left knee. He saw action in only 50 games last season.

(Miami, FL) — The Royals ran their win streak to nine games with a 1-0 victory over the Marlins. Lorenzo Cain singled in the game’s only run in the sixth. At 65-and-60, the defending World Series champions are four games out of an AL Wild Card spot.
