>>Mets Cut Down Cardinals

(St. Louis, MO)  —  Wilmer Flores hit a three-run homer in the first and the Mets went on to cut down the Cardinals, 7-4.  Randall Grichuk hit a solo homer for St. Louis, which is three-and-a-half games ahead of New York in the wild card standings.  Jaime Garcia allowed six runs in only four innings to fall to 10-and-9.

 

>>Cubs Hold Off Padres

(San Diego, CA)  —  Jake Arrieta tossed eight shutout innings and the Cubs held on for a 5-3 win over the Padres.  Arrieta scattered two hits and three walks while striking out six to improve to 16-and-5.  Addison Russell and Kris Bryant homered for Chicago, which is 80-and-45 on the year.  The teams close out the three-game series this afternoon.

 

>>White Sox Trounce Phillies

(Chicago, IL)  —  Jose Abreu homered and plated three as the White Sox pounded the Phillies, 9-1.  Justin Morneau launched a solo shot in Chicago’s third straight win.  Carlos Rodon tossed six-and-two-thirds innings of three-hit, shutout ball to improve to 4-and-8.

 

>>Rangers Release Josh Hamilton

(Cincinnati, OH)  —  The Rangers are placing injured outfielder Josh Hamilton on unconditional release waivers.  The 35-year-old hasn’t played this year while recovering from a series of operations on his left knee.  He saw action in only 50 games last season.

>>Red-Hot Royals Sink Marlins

(Miami, FL)  —  The Royals ran their win streak to nine games with a 1-0 victory over the Marlins.  Lorenzo Cain singled in the game’s only run in the sixth.  At 65-and-60, the defending World Series champions are four games out of an AL Wild Card spot.
>>Report: Teams Inquire About Browns WR Gordon

(Berea, OH)  —  Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon remains a hot commodity.  ESPN reports multiple teams have inquired about trading for the 25-year-old, but the Browns are not interested.  Gordon has had numerous suspensions over the last few years and is suspended for the first four games of this season.
>>Brady Says His Thumb Is Fine After Scissors Mishap

(Foxboro, MA)  —  Patriots quarterback Tom Brady says his throwing thumb is fine after a mishap last week with some scissors.  It happed just before Thursday’s preseason game against the Bears.  Brady, who returned to practice yesterday, says he’s available and ready to play this Friday at Carolina.
>>Report: 20-Plus MLB Teams To Attend Tebow Workout

(Los Angeles, CA)  —  Many big league eyes will be focused on former Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow next week.  ESPN reports that more than 20 major league clubs have confirmed they will attend next Tuesday’s workout as Tebow tries to make the transition from football to baseball.

 

>>Colts Host Eagles Saturday

(Indianapolis, IN)  —  The Colts play host to the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday in preseason action from Lucas Oil Stadium.  Indianapolis is 1-and-1 so far in exhibition action, while the Eagles are unbeaten through two games.  The Colts open the regular season on September 11th at home against Detroit.
