Russell Westbrook scored 31 points as the West ran past the East, 196-173, in the NBA All-Star Game. Westbrook earned MVP honors for the second straight year. The East’s Paul George came one point short of tying Wilt Chamberlain’s record of 42 points.
Lakers star Kobe Bryant suited up in the All-Star Game for the final time. Bryant had 10 points, six rebounds and seven assists in his 18th All-Star appearance. Bryant is retiring at the end fo the year.
scintillating Slam Dunk Contest is a ratings hit. The show put on by Orlando’s Aaron Gordon and Minnesota’s Zach LaVine had an average of seven million views at its peak Saturday night. LaVine eventually won the contest in a dunk-off.
Robby Fabbri and Patrik Berglund scored goals as the Blues beat the Lightning 2-1 at Tampa Bay. Brian Elliott made 37 saves in goal for St. Louis, which is third in the Central Division with 73 points, four behind second-place Chicago. The Blues are back home to host Dallas tomorrow.
Vaughn Taylor captured a one-shot win at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Taylor fired a seven-under 65 in the final round to finish 17-under for the championship. Taylor earned his first PGA Tour win since 2005 after Phil Mickelson lipped out a potential playoff-forcing putt on the final hole.
Rookie driver Chase Elliott already has his name in the record books. The 20-year-old Elliott became the youngest driver ever to secure the pole position for the Daytona 500 yesterday. Elliott will lead the field in this Sunday’s season-opening race.
Illinois will clash with Rutgers in Champaign tomorrow night. The Illini suffered a 58-56 road loss to Northwestern Saturday. Illinois enters the week 3-and-9 in the Big Ten and 11-and-14 overall.
